Christening and Baptism mean one and the same thing. It is about recognising that your child is a gift from God and that you want him/her to know the reality of His love by becoming a member of the church. It is like a gateway into a way of life where your little one will grow to know and love the way God has shown himself to the world in Jesus Christ.
Email or phone Fr Andrew so that we can chat it through.
Usually Christenings take place in the parish church where you live. If you live further away but have links with St Matthew’s or want to worship with us as a family, then do still make contact and we can talk that through.

You will be invited to attend a Sunday morning service, so that you can see what we’re like and then one of our team will visit you and talk in a bit more detail about what a Christening means and the promises you are asked to make.
Baptisms take place on Sundays and we can offer this within our 10am Parish Communion service. Preferably on the 3rd Sunday of the month when there is a Family Service or in the afternoons if that ends up being the best option.
You can choose up to four Godparents, who will need to have been baptised themselves. Do invite as many family and friends as you would like to. We have a big church and can accommodate any number!
A service of Baptism is not a “one off” thing. We hope you and your family will want to stay with us. We have a number of groups for toddlers and older children and times of worship especially geared to them.
We hope this explanation has been of help to you and that you will make contact with us to take things further.
