Welcome

A welcome from the Vicar

At first, you could stand on the doorstep and see only green fields ahead of you. Then your eyes would be drawn to the railway line where steam trains would come chugging by. That was 150 years ago, but if you come today, the scene is very different…

Welcome to St Matthew’s Redhill!

It has been my privilege to be Vicar of St Matthew’s for the past ten years. I love being here. None of the things we do could happen without the “cast of thousands” who each take responsibility for different aspects of the life we share. This starts with the staff team but spreads out into the lives of the whole congregation in one way or another.

We are the Church of England serving this busy town centre community and we would love to have you join us.

Our worship is very important to us, so we believe in praying together, not just on Sundays, but throughout the week. Take a look at St Matthew’s Day to Day for all our regular times of worship and activities.

Holy Communion the sharing of bread and wine is at the heart of all we do, so when we come together we want to offer God the best we can. There are lots of ways to get involved at St. Matthew’s either using the gifts you have or trying out something new, but if you would prefer just to slip in quietly, we will make you feel welcome without overdoing it!

We are a growing church community of all ages and those who worship with us are drawn from over twenty nationalities. Many people have joined us simply because they fell in through the front door one day or because they were looking for some peace and quiet. Some found they had something to celebrate and others were hurting inside and wondered if anyone would listen without judging.

We are far from perfect. There are many loose ends at St Matthew’s, but this does mean we can try to reach out (where reaching out is needed) and we can make you feel a part of something, if belonging is what you are looking for.

Our building is beautiful, but we don’t believe in hiding ourselves behind stone walls. We roll up our sleeves and get involved in the community we are called to serve. Take a look at our Outreach section to read how this is developing.

We live in complex and puzzling days… but what ever has drawn you to our website, I hope you will find what you are looking for, and if you can’t, then please do contact us.

I hope we may have the pleasure of welcoming you across our doorstep sometime soon. I’m sorry there won’t be any steam trains in the background, but you may find something even more exciting.

Fr Andrew
